Homemade Natural Cleaners – Getting Started

Homemade Natural Cleaners - How to Get Started :: Five Little Homesteaders

If you’ve read my blog for any length of time, you know I like to do things as naturally as possible.  I also like to do a lot things myself.  One area that this is especially true is when it comes to cleaning my home.  Homemade natural cleaners are one of my favorite DIY projects.  Call me a weirdo, but I find it incredibly satisfying to whip up a batch of homemade natural cleaners in my kitchen with supplies that I have on hand.

What about you?  Are you ready to get started with making your own homemade natural cleaners?  Do you already do it?  What do you make?  Read on to learn more about my efforts.

Why Use Homemade Natural Cleaners?

Cleaners that you buy at the store are almost all considered toxic and dangerous.  Fumes are strong and sickening.  Gloves are often required when using these products.

Some of the chemicals used in these products include phosphates, ammonia, bleach and formaldehyde.  Now…. if these chemicals are dangerous to ingest and/or smell, why would you want to slather them all over the surfaces that your family will eat off of, bathe in and play on?

For me, the number one reason to use homemade natural cleaners is to protect my family from these dangerous chemicals.  I like and appreciate that I can get similar cleaning power from natural products that I make myself.

Basic Ingredients to Have on Hand

There are definitely some very basic ingredients to have on hand to ensure that you can always whip up some cleaner when you need to. These include:

  • baking soda (I wrote a post about my love for baking soda here.)
  • white vinegar (I wrote a bit about my love for vinegar here.)
  • water
  • various essential oils of your liking - http://amzn.to/1gjBzXP
  • washing soda
  • borax - http://amzn.to/13SCPHw (optional, some people aren’t comfortable with the use of borax)

Basic Recipes for Homemade Natural Cleaners

Pretty much any cleaner you buy at the store, you can make at home.
