Lemon Lavender Bars

Lemon Lavender Bars :: Five Little Homesteaders

You guys all know by now that I love lavender.  I posted about my top 10 uses for lavender not too long ago.

Two more things that I love are dessert and lemons.  Lemonade is one of my favorite drinks.  So, when I ran across the idea of making lemon bars with a hint of lavender in a book I was reading, I decided I just HAD to try it.  I added the lavender to the crust and it makes for a subtle addition to the already delicious taste of lemon bars.  I was worried that it might be overwhelming but it was far from that.  Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Simple Chocolate Cake

Super Simple Chocolate Cake Recipe :: Five Little Homesteaders

Sometimes you just need a simple chocolate cake.

Y’all know that I’m not into the boxed stuff, though, right?  It’s got to be from scratch.  No question.

I’ve been working on my chocolate cake recipe for a while.  I started with one from Betty Crocker - http://amzn.to/Nw0CL7 but it wasn’t exactly right (in my opinion).

So I messed with proportions, threw in an extra egg, omitted the vinegar and here’s what I came up with.

Homemade Mustard

Simple Homemade Mustard :: Five Little Homesteaders

If you know me, you know I’ve been working for over a year to make more and more food at home, from scratch.  I like to know what ingredients are put into my food and I like to know how it was made.  I also just have fun making things!

This homemade mustard recipe is my latest discovery.  (If you recall, I’ve already done homemade ketchup.)  I had to tweak a few things and pull parts from about five different recipes to figure out a flavor that worked for me but in the end, I’m really happy with what I came up with.

Homemade Ranch Dressing

Homemade Ranch Dressing :: Five Little Homesteaders

Ranch Dressing.

There, I said it.  Are you salivating?

My love for ranch dressing started when I was a kid and we ate salads every night.  I would slather the stuff on.  As a high schooler, I started dipping my pizza in it (ahhh… to have THAT metabolism again!).  However, during my youth it was always store bought and bottled dressing that I was using.

In even some of the most “healthy” store bought brands you’ll find: soybean oil, canola oil, xanthan gum and MSG.  In homemade ranch dressing?  Nope.  You won’t have to use any of that stuff.

How to Make Mint Syrup

Oh mint. I love you and I hate you.

On one hand, you smell lovely and you make things taste delicious.  On the other hand, you invade my garden and pop up EVERYWHERE that you do not belong.  You are like an ex-boyfriend who just won’t go away.

Last spring I planted two mint plants – peppermint and spearmint.  They were gifted to me and they were beautiful.  I stuck those babies in the ground without a second thought.  Well, those of you who are seasoned gardeners out there will know what I am now dealing with…..MINT.  MINT.  And more MINT.  It is EVERYWHERE.  It’s a good thing I like the smell.

I decided since I have so much of it, I might as well start figuring out what to do with it.  The first thing I’ve done (aside from making tea) is figured out how to make mint syrup.

Maple Syrup & Recipes for those who LOVE it

A Round Up for those who LOVE Maple Syrup :: Five Little Homesteaders

I came to my love for maple syrup later in life.

It makes me sad, honestly.  I wasted so many good years where I could have been eating maple syrup… but instead, I ate “table syrup”  aka high fructose syrup aka YUCK.

And I have to admit this, because, well, there might be some of you out there like me who think you prefer table syrup over the real deal.  But let me tell you, you don’t.  Maple syrup is where it’s at.  Give it a shot and I promise, it won’t disappoint.  That said, the purpose of this post today is two fold:

  1. I’m giving you some links to 15+ AMAZING waffle and pancake recipes.  (You’ll need these because you’ll want to test my theory that maple syrup is awesome, of course.)
  2. For the next week, I’m accepting entries in an AMAZING giveaway for 32 oz of Mohawk Valley Trading Company’s - http://www.tenonanatche.com/index.htm dark, robust maple syrup - http://www.tenonanatche.com/maple-syrup.htm .
