Which Produce to Buy Organic

Which Produce to Buy Organic

Adapted from ewg.org

Recently I was doing some research on which produce to buy organic versus that which I might be able to save a little money on and buy conventional.

I know a lot of you would say to buy everything organic, but others of you will be able to relate to my dilemma.  I have a family of six plus a dog, cat and ten chickens.  I can’t always do all my shopping at the local health food store or farmer’s market.  Often I need to shop at Target or a “regular” grocery store.  I also can’t really afford to buy everything organic.  I do grow a lot of our own veggies, but I don’t grow them all.  With four small children, making multiple stops at various stores is often not feasible (or sanity inducing).  So…. that lead me to start researching which I can save on and which I should splurge on.   Read on to learn more about my list of which produce to buy organic.

Making Homemade Deodorant

Making Homemade Deodorant - The Ultimate Guide

I’ve been interested in making homemade deodorant for a while.  Have you?

Having breast cancer run in my family is one main reason that making homemade deodorant seems like a good idea.  I’m not much of a conspiracy theorist but putting that much chemical on my armpits everyday and chemically clogging and controlling my sweat glands just doesn’t seem like a good idea when you think about it rationally…. you know?  Obviously scientists haven’t made any strong connections between health problems and deodorant use, by why risk it?  Making homemade deodorant is easy and cheap!  Read on to learn more.

The Ultimate, Easy and Effective, Herbal Tea Blend for Sleep

I’m late to the party.

I’m sure 90% of you who are reading this post are looking at your screen saying, “Well, duh, Colleen.  I’ve been making my own sleep blend for eons!”

Well, I have to admit, I’m new-ish to the game.  Up until this point, I’ve just been buying blends at the store like this one - http://amzn.to/1qCyYhB or this one - http://amzn.to/1qCz2Ot .  They seem to work well and are tasty, but when you’re buying pre-mixed blends, you are (generally) wasting money and have less control over the ratios of herbs, specific herbs and the quality of the herbs you are ingesting (among other things, I’m sure).

Being the daughter of an herbalist, I decided to give it a go myself.

Water Kefir: Tips, Tricks and Lessons Learned

Water Kefir: Tips, Tricks and Lessons Learned :: Five Little Homesteaders

Were getting all kinds of involved in fermentation over here on our little homestead.

You see, while most of you are out there planting, harvesting and enjoying the great outdoors, those of us living in Phoenix are locked in our houses huddled under the nearest air conditioning vent.  So, as any good hermit would do, I took to caring for extra “creatures,” i.e. all my fermented cultures.  My first foray into new fermentation territory is with water kefir.
