Quick & Easy Tomato Peeling

Here’s a short, but useful, post for your Sunday.

You may be asking, “why do I need to peel my tomatoes?  What a pain.  Why would I go to all this trouble?”

And the answer is, no one HAS to peel their tomatoes.  You can definitely use them without peeling them.  However, if you don’t want to be picking tomato skin out of your teeth after you eat your homemade salsa or sauce, then you should definitely plan on taking the time to peel them.

Here’s how you do it:

1.  Bring a pot of water to boiling.  Put your tomatoes into the water and let them stay there for about 2-3 minutes.  (If you’ve got a good eye, you’ll notice the skin start wrinkling up… then you’ll know it’s time to take them out of the water.)

2.  After the 2-3 minutes, use a slotted spoon to fish your tomatoes out and plunge them into an ice-water bath.  Let them sit there for another 2-3 minutes.

3.  Take them out and the skin will just easily peel off.  I did this with a huge batch of cherry tomatoes.  It didn’t take very long at all and the cherry tomatoes made a DELICIOUS salsa.
