Increasing Food Self-Sufficiency :: Five Little Homesteaders

When setting up plans for your homestead, it is always nice to know how to get the most bang for your buck.  That is, which fruits, vegetables and other food items will give you the highest yield and provide the most nutrients for your family.

Most of us grow our own food in an attempt to be more self-sufficient and rely less on the grocery store.  So, with that in mind, what should we be growing to achieve this goal?

In this post, I’m going to give you the top 5 crops I think you should consider when trying to increase your food self sufficiency.

72 Hour Kit – Getting Prepared

Getting Prepared with a 72-Hour Kit :: Five Little Homesteaders

As I’ve talked about in previous posts, I really believe that my family needs to do a lot more prepping.  While I’m not particularly concerned with a zombie apocalypse or anything, I do know that even minor emergencies can leave an unprepared family feeling helpless.  I wrote a post recently on how we have restocked our first aid kit as an important, though minor, first step to being more prepared.

Now I feel ready to take on the larger task of creating (and maintaining!) a 72-hour kit.

Prepping for Beginners – Top 5 Tips

Prepping for Beginners :: Five Little Homesteaders

Are you a “prepper?”  Know what a prepper is?  Think “prepping” is just for those “crazy” people who worry about the armageddon, zombies taking over and/or the world coming to an end?

For those of you who don’t know – a prepper is generally considered to be a person who takes seriously the responsibility of caring for themselves and/or their family during difficult or catastrophic times.   Could this relate to the zombie apocalypse?  Sure!  But more likely, it relates to an electrical storm that leaves you without power or snow storm that makes it impossible for you to leave your house or perhaps, it can even relate to the loss of a job by the bread winner of the family.

Prepping for difficult times is important for all of us to consider.  It is definitely something I need to do more of and something that I PLAN to do more about – hence my interest in writing a post on prepping for beginners.  (Not to mention that I was introduced to this really cool preparedness planner recently and if you know me, you know I like a good planner.)  I definitely consider myself a beginner in this department and if you do too, this might be just the post for you.

Stocking Your Family’s First Aid Kit

Stocking the Family First Aid Kit

One of the things I’d like to accomplish in the new year is to be more prepared for emergencies big and small.  I figured there were a few of you out there who feel the same way so I decided to start a series on Prepping for Beginners.  I thought a good place to start would be with creating a well stocked first aid kid.

Preparedness and prepping are pretty big buzz words out there right now, especially in homesteading circles.  That said, I’m not planning to build a bunker, stock up on guns or have a year’s worth of food supply in my basement (more power to you if that’s your goal, though), but I am also not comfortable with my family’s current state of preparedness.  For instance, until I decided to write this post, we didn’t even have a proper first aid kit!  Please tell me I’m not alone.
